Martha Susan Wallace Roarick
Susan, as she preferred to be called, was born in Richmond, Virginia on June 29th, 1939. She spent her childhood in Washington, DC; and later in the suburbs of Maryland and Virginia, meeting her husband, Jim, when they both sang in the choir at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Bethesda, MD. In 1966, Jim's job took him and Susan and their first two children, Judy and Michael, to Cochituate, Massachusetts, where Deborah was born in 1967. The family of five then moved to Carol Stream, Illinois while Debbie was still an infant. In 1970, Jim had an opportunity to take Susan and the children along for six months to a suburb outside of London, England. Returning to their Illinois home in the spring of 1971, the birth of Kathleen rounded out the family. About this time Susan developed an interest in medicine and found a job as a secretary in the ER of the DuPage County Hospital in West Chicago, Illinois. In 1979 Jim, Susan, Debbie and Kathy made the final family move to Phoenix, Arizona. Susan quickly found employment as a secretary in the ER at Boswell Hospital and some years later, moved to Phoenix Baptist Hospital in the Department of Outpatient Surgery, where she retired many years later at the age of 70. Having battled Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma starting in 2003, Susan was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's shortly after retiring in 2010.
As many know, Susan's true love was always animals, especially dogs. This love started when Susan was a young girl in Washington, DC and she would visit the DC zoo, rain or shine, every weekend even in the snow of winter. She almost always had at least one dog in her life. She would read Kennel Club magazines front to back and devour every word as if it was oxygen. She loved to watch the Westminster Dog Show on TV and attend local dog shows when she could.
Alzheimer's having taken its toll on Susan; she was called home on Thursday, May 11th, 2017 in Glendale, Arizona.
She is survived by her husband, Jim and their four children, Judy (Carl) Balasa, Michael (Kaye) Roarick, Deborah (Keith) Ensign and Kathleen (Nathan) Ockrassa and grandchildren, Jennifer (Sean) Piszczek, Stephanie (David) Alexander, Jordan (Moises) Moreno, Cassidy Ensign, Nicholas Ensign and Shane Ockrassa; along with eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial will be held on June 1st at 1:30pm, at the family's church, Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 8902 W. Deer Valley Road, Peoria, AZ. 85382. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Susan's name to the Alzheimer's Association.

Arrangements under the direction of Sunland Memorial Park, Mortuary & Cremation Center, Sun City, AZ.
