Joan Carroll Freiburghouse was born on May 13, 1934 in Honolulu, Hawaii to parents Elizabeth Tierney Carroll and Leonard Fredrick Freiburghouse. The daughter of a naval officer, Joan called many locations home as the family traveled on military assignments. She was an impish youngster who loved sailing and getting into mischief, much to her father's chagrin. Life on the water was engrained in her from an early age.

Joan met Edwin Lage McCutcheon while living in Annapolis, MD. Edwin was a cadet at the Naval Academy and was frequently invited to meals with the Freiburghouse family by Joan's father. Joan attended William and Mary College for two years, before marrying Edwin on June 19,1954.
The child of a naval officer became an officer's wife as Edwin entered the submarine service. Edwin and Joan had three children: Elizabeth Jane, William Leonard, and Nalani Anne. Joan masterfully moved the household as they transferred to duty stations, and managed to raise the family alone for months while Edwin was at sea. Joan played a significant unpaid role supporting and assisting the crew families while the submarine crew were at sea.

Joan and Edwin settled in Omaha, Nebraska in 1970, where they lived for twenty+ years. During that time they delighted in life on the shores of Chris Lake. Swimming, paddleboating, gardening, iceboating, and playing practical jokes on their neighbors were some of the highlights of their time.
Joan and Edwin moved to Sun City, Arizona to care for Edwin's parents, and they remained in Sun City for the rest of their lives. Joan was involved in the Sun City Aqua Fitness, and served the Dawn Lake Homeowners Association as the garden chairperson.

Joan spent her life being involved in her community and contributed thousands of volunteer hours to causes she cared about. She is remembered for her love of animals and life on the lake, and for her generosity to the people she loved. Her laugh, her quick wit and her presence will be missed, especially by her children.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Elizabeth Deck, and her husband Edwin Lage McCutcheon. She is survived by her children: Elizabeth McCutcheon; William (Karen) McCutcheon; and Nalani McCutcheon (Katherine Sandberg), and her grandson Austin Gene William McCutcheon.
